An der marokkanischen Atlantikküste liegt die Hafenstadt Essaouira. Vom arabischen souirah für Bild oder Zeichnung abgeleitet, ist der ganze Ort voller Bilder. Sie verhelfen Essaouira zum Ruf einer Künstlerstadt. Nach den Hippies kamen Intellektuelle und Künstler und mischen sich in das arabische Leben. In der weißen Medina mit ihren verwinkelten Gassen findet man mit etwas Glück das Riad Alech. Das Haus aus dem 18.Jahrhundert, wurde mit viel Respekt und Feingefühl renoviert.
Das ist dem französischen Architekten Daniel und seiner Frau Bouchra zu verdanken. Die originalen Fliesen wurden erhalten und für die Wände Tadelakt, ein klassischer marokkanischer Kalkputz, verwendet. Jedes Zimmer ist liebevoll eingerichtet und an der Wand hängen Daniels Bilder. Überall frische Blumen und die jeden Abend entzündeten Kerzen entführen einen in eine andere Zeit. Vier Zimmer werden vermietet und man kann sich wirklich als Gast fühlen!
Heute lebt das Ehepaar einige Monate des Jahres hier, in ihrer Heimat, und einige Monate in der Provence. Der Name des Riads ist Alech. Das ist das arabische Wort für warum. Warum? Auf der Dachterrasse stehend, mit Blick auf das Meer und in den strahlend warmen, blauen Himmel an einem Tag im Januar stellt sich mir die Frage überhaupt nicht!

Alech?
Situated on the Moroccan Atlantic coast is the port city of Essaouira. From the Arab souirah derived from picture or drawing, the whole place is full of pictures. They help to give Essaouira the reputation of an artists‘ town. After the hippies, came the intellectuals and artists mixing into the Arab life.
In the white Medina, with its angled turns and with a little luck the Riad Alech can be found. The 18th century house was renovated with respect and sensitivity.
This is to thank the French architect Daniel and his wife Bouchra. The original tiles were used for the walls along with tadelakt, a traditional Moroccan lime plaster.
Each room is carefully furnished with Daniels‘ pictures hanging on the walls. Fresh flowers and lit candles are everywhere, transporting you to a bygone era every evening.
Four rooms are to be rented and there one can really feel like a guest! Currently the couple spend a few months of the year here and the rest of the year in Provence.
The name of the Riad is Alech. This is the Arabic word for why. Why? Standing on the rooftop terrace, overlooking the sea and in the bright warm, blue sky on a day in the middle January this question doesn’t occur to me at all!
