Der Hutmacher

Reinhard Plank / Florenz

The hatter

The air on the banks of the river Arno shimmers with the heat of the day and directly opposite is the creative workshop of Reinhard Plank. I feel a bit like Alice meeting the hatter in Wonderland.
There are finished hats in all shapes and colours not just on the shelves, but everywhere. In addition to classic models, also a lot of special designs and materials. Other shelves are filled with hat forms, because every single hat is made with dedication by hand. These are brought to their final form by applying heat and pressure with the help of a very nostalgic machine going back more than a century. His creations sell worldwide, are particularly popular in Japan and also adorn famous heads such as Brad Pitt’s.
The craft of hatmaking has a long tradition in Florence and Reinhard’s passion for this craft ultimately took him here. When he found the building where he now works and lives, however, it was still a dressmaking factory. It took years to renovate the space. Little by little, his lamps and other flea market treasures collected over the years found their place. The attic has been opened and now features a large panoramic window overlooking his garden and the mountain with wine, olives, and fig trees. After work, he likes to go to his mountain on the path of contemplation, as he calls it. Maybe someone born in South Tyrol needs his own mountain in Tuscany, too.
