Der Tag, an dem wir uns treffen, ist kalt und fast weiß. Umso schöner ist die Stimmung im Wöschhüsli Avrir, direkt an einem kleinen Bach. Das alte Waschhaus dient heute als Atelier.
Die Tür öffnet sich und ich betrete die Löffelwelt von Gabi Veit. Hier sind Löffel kein einfacher Alltagsgegenstand. Mit einigen könnte man sicher auch Suppe schöpfen, aber sie lösen sich so weit von ihrer ursprünglichen Funktion, dass man sie nur als Individuen betrachten kann. Es sind Kreaturen, sinnliche Geschöpfe, die sich in etwas Neues verwandelt haben.
Gabi ist eine echte Frohnatur und ihre Liebe zur Natur ist überall sichtbar. Wahrscheinlich ist ihr das schon in die Wiege gelegt worden. Aufgewachsen ist sie, umgeben von der wunderschönen Natur Südtirols, in einer Gärtnerei. Auch heute hat sie die Natur, die sie liebt, direkt vor der Haustür. Dort beobachtet sie, wie Pflanzen beispielsweise unterschiedliche Dornen hervorbringen und sich somit zur Wehr setzen können.
Hülsen, Nüsse, Früchte, Blumen, Äste, Dornen und viele andere Fundstücke, die ihr als Inspiration dienen, finden sich überall. Ihre Löffelgeschöpfe und auch ihr Schmuck haben oft diese Verbindung, aber auch Rituale und der Einfluss der Religion sind spürbar.
Gabis eigener Blick, ihre Hingabe für die kleinen Dinge und nicht zu vergessen, ihr Humor, zeigen sich in vielen Details. Im Wohnhaus gibt es zum Beispiel eine Wand mit lauter kleinen Kringeln. Diese hat Gabi mit Bleistift einzeln aufgezeichnet. Was diese Geschichte für mich besonders macht, ist, dass sie sie am Ende gezählt hat. Es sind 36.310 mit der Hand gezeichnete kleine Kringel.

Spoonfuls of goodness
The day we meet is cold and almost white. The atmosphere in the Wöschhüsli Avrir, right next to a small stream, is all the more cosy. The old washhouse now serves as a studio.
The door opens and I enter Gabi Veit’s world of spoons. Here, spoons are not just everyday objects. Some might still can be used to scoop soup, but they are so far removed from their original function that they can only be seen as individuals. They are creatures, sensual beings that have been transformed into something new.
Gabi is a real cheerful nature and her love for nature is visible everywhere. This love was probably instilled in her from the start. She grew up surrounded by the stunning nature of South Tyrol, in a nursery. Even today, she has the nature she loves right at her doorstep.
There, she observes how plants, for example, produce different thorns to defend themselves.
Pods, nuts, fruit, flowers, branches, thorns and many other found objects that serve as her inspiration can be found everywhere. Her spoon creatures and her jewellery often have this connection, but rituals and the influence of religion can also be felt.
Gabi’s own eye, her dedication to the little things and, not to forget, her sense of humour, are reflected in many details.
In the house, for example, there is a wall covered with lots of little circles. Gabi has drawn them individually with a pencil. What makes this story special for me is that she counted them at the end. There are 36,310 little circles drawn by hand.
