Melquiades

Iris Tonies + Arnout Krediet / Barcelona

Melquiades

Moored in a quiet harbour at the futuristic-looking edge of Barcelona is the sailboat Melquiades, christened after a character in Gabriel García Márquez novel Cien años de soledad (one hundred years of solitude). The old gypsy looks like he is going to die, but his journeys through the course of the novel cause him to become younger and younger.
This Melquiades is home to Iris and Arnout and their little pirates Gaje and Piebe. The family is not tied to solid land and can always take their home with them as they journey. For Iris, the artist-nomad, work and travel are closely tied.
Their studio is in the Gothic Quarter, the heart of the old city. Between Iris’ installations and her wonderful sketch books I discover a picture of Iris Apfel. The young Iris rightly calls the 90 year old style icon her new hero!
In two ancient buildings is Estudio Nómada, a free art school led by Iris and Arnout together where the art program with new students from all over the world has just started. At night we all sit with wine and candlelight surrounded by the studio’s walls laden with history. The students are getting to know one another, all are excited and inspired by their new city. A beautiful end to a beautiful day and I know: they will all have a great time!
