Sense of calm

Yasha Butler / Barcelona

Sense of calm

Yasha is at home in a beautiful house of modernism close to the Sagrada Família. The backdrop of the city lies at the feet of the house. What is grabbing my attention immediately is a calm and relaxed atmosphere which consists from the light, shadows and clear shapes.
Yasha radiates this clarity too. She was born and raised at Bosphorus, studied in the USA and today she shuttles between Istanbul and Barcelona.
How she works, I see in L’Hospitalet. The second largest city in Catalonia directly borders the south side of Barcelona and it is far less pretentious than its big sister next door. The style here is not gothic nor modernism, but vibrant and authentic.
I find Yasha there at Studio LaNave in a giant, yellow factory building, the Edifici Freixas. This industrial building from the 60s was originally a factory and is now its own world of international artists and designers.
Yasha is constantly taking a step back and looking at the ceramic she is currently creating in her hands. Landscape, cliffs, the salt water of the Mediterranean and the gnarled olive trees of her heimat are her inspiration. Her ceramics surrounds also a feeling of clarity and calm. This is her kind of seduction!
